Garlon 600 Herbicide (Triclopyr)

Ideal for controlling broadleaf weeds, woody weeds, and melons, Garlon 600 is a herbicide formulated with the active ingredient triclopyr. It’s commonly used in environments including pastures, forests, and industrial areas.

Garlon is available in a foliar spray format that can be easily applied directly to the leaves and stems of tenacious woody weeds and many common species of noxious herbaceous weeds. Other common application methods include basal bark and cut stump application, high-volume spraying, and boom spraying.

Because Garlon 600 Herbicide is selective, it’s safe to use around crops and desirable species of plants. Triclopyr has residual life in the soil, but this is very short, so sensitive crops and shrubs can be planted in the treated area soon after you’ve applied the herbicide.

Active ingredient: Triclopyr @ 600g/L

Comparable to: MACA 600 Herbicide (Conquest) | Invader 600 Herbicide (Nufarm) | Axeman 600 Herbicide (Apparent)

Pack sizes: 1L, 5L and 20L

Description

What is the active ingredient in Garlon 600 Herbicide?

The active ingredient in Garlon 600 is triclopyr, which is a Group I herbicide that belongs to the pyridines group of chemicals.

How does Garlon 600 work?

What types of weeds does Garlon weedkiller target?

Garlon 600 targets a range of different broadleaf weeds, woody weeds, and melons, including:

Acacia Genus Eucalyptus Species – See Label

According to the Garlon 600 Herbicide label, whether you can use a 12-volt sprayer to treat Eucalypt seedlings depends on the application method you choose. You cannot use a 12-volt sprayer for High Volume Foliar Spraying (Garlon 600 diluted in water), as the label requires a properly calibrated high-pressure handgun for this task to be effective. However, the label does permit the use of knapsack or 12-volt sprayers for Low Volume Basal Bark and Cut Stump (Garlon diluted in diesel) treatments on Eucalypts. You must select an application method and use only the equipment specified for it on the label. For further clarification, contact the manufacturer Corteva Agriscience p. 1800 700 096

The general instructions on the label for Garlon 600 Herbicide do specify that Garlon 600 Herbicide is compatible with Glyphosate in fallow situations. The label for Garlon 600 Herbicide states to refer to the glyphosate label for rate and adjuvant recommendations; however, it does not specify any information about including Ammonium sulfate in the tank mix. We recommend consulting the label for the glyphosate-based product you intend to use as well as the Garlon 600 Herbicide label and contacting the manufacturer for Garlon 600 Herbicide for further information about including Ammonium sulfate in the mix, DOW AgroSciences Australia Limited on 1800 700 096

Garlon 600 Herbicide (Triclopyr) does not claim nor has a current APVMA permit registered to control Blue Periwinkle (vinca major). There is a current APVMA permit 9907 held by the NSW Office of Environment and Heritage, which includes the registered use of several different herbicides to control Blue Periwinkle, i.e. Fluroxypyr, Glyphosate, or Metsulfuron-methyl. For further details on the use of these herbicides, please refer to https://weeds.dpi.nsw.gov.au/Weeds/Blueperiwinkle. Please be aware that these herbicides can severely damage or kill surrounding plants/ trees if they come in contact. Always read the 'directions for use label' carefully to ensure suitability to your situation.

Garlon 600 Herbicide 'directions for use' can be found on the product page. Scroll down to the 'SDS & Technical' tab; a PDF file will be available for download or printing. Recommends for controlling Broom (Genista spp.) as a basal bark or cut stump application at a mixing rate of 1.25L to 60L diesel. Always read the 'directions for use' carefully before use.

Garlon 600 Herbicide is not registered or recommended to control Wandering Jew (Trad). Herbicides made from Fluroxypyr (i.e. Starane) effectively control Wandering Jew or Trad (Tradescantia albiflora) in agricultural non-crop areas, commercial and industrial areas, forests, pastures and rights-of-way. As there are different strengths of Fluroxypyr, the mixing rates vary. Fluroxypyr @ 200g/L - 150mL per 10L Water, Fluroxypyr @ 333g/L (Starane Advanced) - 90mL per 10L Water & Fluroxypyr @ 400g/L - 75mL per 10L Water. Note - Use as a foliar spray and apply to young plants up to and including flowering. Some regrowth will usually occur and will require retreatment. Another option is to use Vigilant II Gel as a leaf-wiping application. Vigilant II Gel must be applied to at least 50% of the leaves.

Garlon 600 Herbicide is not registered for or makes any claims of controlling Agapanthus. Garlon is registered to be applied as a basal bark/cut stump or foliar application in Agricultural Non-Crop Areas, Commercial and Industrial Areas, Forests, Pastures and Rights-Of-Way, not domestic. We would suggest Vigilant II Herbicide Gel be considered, which is registered to control Agapanthus.

Garlon 600 Herbicide (made from Triclopyr) is not registered to control Common Sensitive Plant (mimosa pudica). However, several different actives are registered to control Common Sensitive Plant depending on the situation, stage of growth, and application. i.e. Starane Advanced (Fluroxypyr, or Fireball 400 (Fluroxypyr), or Sabakem Fluroxypyr 400 Herbicide (Fluroxypyr), or Grazon Extra (Aminopyralid, Picloram & Triclopyr), or Scrubba (Picloram & Triclopyr), or Hatchet Herbicide (Picloram & Triclopyr).

Garlon 600 Herbicide is registered to be applied to many noxious plants in Agricultural Non-Crop Areas, Commercial and Industrial Areas, Forests, Pastures and Rights-Of-Way as a cut stump application. Although not explicitly registered to control Wisteria, Vigilant II Herbicide Gel may be a better option than Garlon 600 as it is ideally suited for use in environmentally sensitive and difficult-to-access areas. Vigilant II is applied directly to freshly cut/crushed stems or trunks of weed plants.

Neither the Garlon 600 nor the Spray Seed label have either product listed as being compatible, so we would not recommend using them together in a tank mix.  If you decide to go 'off-label' and mix both products, a jar test would be advised before application.

Tips For Use

Application considerations

  • Garlon 600 should only be applied to weeds that are actively growing.
  • When weeds are stressed due to factors including cold weather, poor nutrition, disease, variable moisture levels (e.g., during times of drought or water-logging due to excess rainfall), or past herbicide use, avoid further herbicide application as weed control may be rendered ineffective.
  • In areas that have been bulldozed, burnt, ploughed, slashed, or previously chemically treated, always wait until regrowth has returned to at least one metre high before further treatment is administered.
  • Avoid cutting, clearing, or burning off woody weeds for at least six months following treatment with Garlon 600 herbicide.
  • If treating native vegetation with Garlon 600 weedkiller, refer to state and/or local legislation to ensure compliance.

Weather constraints

  • Always consider rainfall when administering herbicides like Garlon 600. If rain is expected within one hour, hold spraying until the rain has cleared. If tank-mixing triclopyr with a glyphosate 450 herbicide, observe a 6-hour window for rainfall.
  • Do not spray if weed foliage is wet from past rain or dew to ensure your best chance at product penetration.

Application tips

Gas-powered guns

When using a gas-powered gun, administer herbicide in 50ml shots to ensure even coverage of between 4m² and 5m² surface area of the target bush or weed. This equates to 20 droplets per cm² of leaf surface.

Basal bark and cut stump application

Mix Garlon 600 with diesel following the directions for use found on the Product Label. When using diesel as a herbicide carrier, it’s important to note that the chemical may wear away at the rubber seals of certain sprayers. To avoid this, opt for sprayers with Viton seals and fittings.

To ensure your safety while applying Garlon 600 with diesel, wear nitrile gloves rather than rubber gloves.

Basal bark method tips

  • When treating plant species with old, rough bark, ensure the area is thoroughly wet. These types of plants require more saturation than smooth-barked species.
  • Liberally spray or paint the bark around the stem of the plant, starting from ground level up to approximately 30cm high. Always wet thoroughly to the point of runoff, unless otherwise stated on the Product Label.
  • Only apply to dry stems, as wet stems can repel the diesel mixture and render the application ineffective.
  • Only use hand-directed equipment like paintbrushes or pressure sprayers.
  • To mitigate excessive splashing or drift, always use low-pressure spray equipment up to 200kPa.

Cut stump method tips

  • Once the stump has been cut, apply your Garlon 600 and diesel mixture immediately. This can be done by spraying or by painting the cut surface and sides of the stem.
  • Ensure plant stems are cut lower than 15cm above ground height.

For Native Vegetation:

Use of Garlon 600 herbicide on native vegetation must be done in accordance with state and/or local legislation.

First aid

If poisoning occurs, contact a doctor or Poisons Information Centre immediately. The Poisons helpline is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week from anywhere in Australia at 131 126.

For additional safety information, refer to the Garlon 600 Herbicide Safety Data Sheet (SDS).
