Garlon 600 Herbicide is not registered or recommended to control Dandelion (Taraxacum officinale). Herbicides recommended to control Dandelion contain MCPA and should be applied to weeds at a young rosette stage, not when the plant has seeded.

  6. I have been recommended to use Triclopyr for Periwinkle (Vinca major) eradication. I have a dreadful outbreak of it in my front garden (every year I try and dig it out, but I'm losing the battle) and grass and paths, and it is choking one of my Evergreen 3m high Evergreen Magnolias (have managed to get to the good one in time but it is there), Daffodils and Lavender bushes and my neighbour's Japonica. I am happy to sacrifice my lavenders and can dig out the bulbs, but I am concerned about what it will do to my two Magnolias. So, would you recommend this or something else?

Garlon 600 Herbicide (Triclopyr) does not claim nor has a current APVMA permit registered to control Blue Periwinkle (vinca major). There is a current APVMA permit 9907 held by the NSW Office of Environment and Heritage, which includes the registered use of several different herbicides to control Blue Periwinkle, i.e. Fluroxypyr, Glyphosate, or Metsulfuron-methyl. For further details on the use of these herbicides, please refer to https://weeds.dpi.nsw.gov.au/Weeds/Blueperiwinkle. Please be aware that these herbicides can severely damage or kill surrounding plants/ trees if they come in contact. Always read the 'directions for use label' carefully to ensure suitability to your situation.

Garlon 600 Herbicide 'directions for use' can be found on the product page. Scroll down to the 'SDS & Technical' tab; a PDF file will be available for download or printing. Recommends for controlling Broom (Genista spp.) as a basal bark or cut stump application at a mixing rate of 1.25L to 60L diesel. Always read the 'directions for use' carefully before use.

  10. To control English Ivy, the spec sheet says "DO NOT treat ivy growing up trees or on other plants as death of the host may result." Is that because of the risk of spraying onto the tree? For example, if I spray the ivy infestation adjacent to the tree (the ivy spreads from that area onto the tree but I've also cut the ivy at the point it climbs the tree) .. is that still dangerous to the tree (the tree in this case is an oak and plane tree).

Garlon 600 Herbicide 'directions for use' list the following critical comment, "Do not treat ivy growing up trees or on other plants as the host's death may result".  This refers to the risk of spraying onto the host tree or plant.

Garlon 600 Herbicide is not registered or recommended to control Wandering Jew (Trad). Herbicides made from Fluroxypyr (i.e. Starane) effectively control Wandering Jew or Trad (Tradescantia albiflora) in agricultural non-crop areas, commercial and industrial areas, forests, pastures and rights-of-way. As there are different strengths of Fluroxypyr, the mixing rates vary. Fluroxypyr @ 200g/L - 150mL per 10L Water, Fluroxypyr @ 333g/L (Starane Advanced) - 90mL per 10L Water & Fluroxypyr @ 400g/L - 75mL per 10L Water. Note - Use as a foliar spray and apply to young plants up to and including flowering. Some regrowth will usually occur and will require retreatment. Another option is to use Vigilant II Gel as a leaf-wiping application. Vigilant II Gel must be applied to at least 50% of the leaves.

Garlon 600 Herbicide is not registered for or makes any claims of controlling Agapanthus. Garlon is registered to be applied as a basal bark/cut stump or foliar application in Agricultural Non-Crop Areas, Commercial and Industrial Areas, Forests, Pastures and Rights-Of-Way, not domestic. We would suggest Vigilant II Herbicide Gel be considered, which is registered to control Agapanthus.

Garlon 600 Herbicide (made from Triclopyr) is not registered to control Common Sensitive Plant (mimosa pudica). However, several different actives are registered to control Common Sensitive Plant depending on the situation, stage of growth, and application. i.e. Starane Advanced (Fluroxypyr, or Fireball 400 (Fluroxypyr), or Sabakem Fluroxypyr 400 Herbicide (Fluroxypyr), or Grazon Extra (Aminopyralid, Picloram & Triclopyr), or Scrubba (Picloram & Triclopyr), or Hatchet Herbicide (Picloram & Triclopyr).

Garlon 600 Herbicide is registered to be applied to many noxious plants in Agricultural Non-Crop Areas, Commercial and Industrial Areas, Forests, Pastures and Rights-Of-Way as a cut stump application. Although not explicitly registered to control Wisteria, Vigilant II Herbicide Gel may be a better option than Garlon 600 as it is ideally suited for use in environmentally sensitive and difficult-to-access areas. Vigilant II is applied directly to freshly cut/crushed stems or trunks of weed plants.

Neither the Garlon 600 nor the Spray Seed label have either product listed as being compatible, so we would not recommend using them together in a tank mix.  If you decide to go 'off-label' and mix both products, a jar test would be advised before application.

Tips For Use

Restraints:

  • Do not apply to weeds which may be stressed (not actively growing) due to prolonged periods of Extreme cold, moisture stress (water-logged or drought affected), poor nutrition,  presence of disease, or previous herbicide treatment as reduced levels of control may result.
  • Do not spray if rain is likely within one hour or if foliage is wet from rain and dew. However, when tank mixed with glyphosate 450 herbicide, this time extends to 6 hours.
  • Do not burn off, cut or clear blackberry or other woody weeds for six months after spraying.

Woody Weed Situations:

  • Weeds need to be actively growing for herbicides to have optimum effect.
  • Delay treatment until all regrowth has had time to grow to one metre high in situations, which have been bulldozed, slashed, burnt, ploughed or areas having a previous chemical treatment.

Gas powered gun:

  • Apply 50 mL shots to obtain uniform coverage of 4 to 5 m² of surface area of bush.
  • This relates to 20 droplets/cm² of leaf surface.

Basal Bark and Cut Stump Treatment:

  • Mix Garlon 600 in diesel. The use of diesel as a herbicide carrier may affect the rubber seals in some sprayers.
  • To avoid this, use sprayers, which use Viton seals and fittings.
  • When using Garlon 600 with diesel, nitrile gloves should be worn instead of rubber gloves.

Basal Bark Method:

  • Do not apply to wet stems as this can repel the diesel mixture.
  • Apply only with hand-directed equipment such as a pressure sprayer or a paintbrush.
  • Spray equipment should be used at low pressures, up to 200 kPa, to avoid excessive splashing or drift.
  • Species with old, rough bark require more thorough wetting than smooth barked species.
  • Liberally spray or paint the bark around the stem from ground level up to 30 cm high, wetting thoroughly to the point of runoff (unless otherwise stated).

Cut Stump Method:

  • Stems should be cut less than 15 cm above the ground.
  • Immediately apply Garlon 600/diesel mixture liberally to the freshly cut stump by spray or painting the cut surface and sides of the stem.

For Native Vegetation:

Use of Garlon 600 herbicide on native vegetation must be done in accordance with state and/or local legislation.

First Aid:

  • If poisoning occurs contact a doctor or Poisons Information Centre. Phone Australia 131 126.
  • For further information, refer to the Safety Data Sheet (SDS).

Withholding Period

Withholding Period Details (WHP):

  • Pasture, Sorghum: Not required when used as directed.
